12mo. pp. 292. Contemporary vellum. “This Book belongs to ye novisses novisship”.
Sole edition. Prepared for the English nuns of the Our Lady of Sion Augustinian Convent in Paris, the predecessor of St. Augustine's Priory in Ealing. Lettice Mary Tredway (1595-1677), an English canonness regular, and Miles Pinkney (1599-1674), a priest of the English College at Douai, planned to open a monastery of canonesses for English subjects only at Douai. After the Catholic authorities at home and abroad were on board with this project, the founders decided to open this English priory at Paris instead in 1634. From 1639 onward, the institution that schooled girls escaping the persecution of Catholics in England was situated at the rue des Fossés Saint-Victor. The ownership inscription in the book suggests it may even have belonged to a member of this community, “ye novisses’ noviceship.”
